Highview Evangelical Presbyterian Church
At Highview we seek to be a church that is rooted in God’s word as our only foundation, and that magnifies the glory of God in everything that we do. As a member of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC), we are part of a global movement of churches that share the characteristics of being evangelical, Reformed, missional, and Presbyterian.
WE ARE EVANGELICAL
The word “evangelical” comes from the Greek word “evangel,” which means “gospel.” To be evangelical means we put the gospel at the center of our identity, our ministry, and our purpose. The gospel is the good news that Jesus is the Son of God who became flesh and died for our sins on the cross. Through faith in Jesus Christ we are freed from our sins and given the gift of eternal life. This salvation is found in no one else. As Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
WE ARE PRESBYTERIAN
The word “Presbyterian” describes how we organize and govern ourselves. It indicates that our congregation is ruled by elders. The elders are a team of trusted and godly servant-leaders who oversee and shepherd the church. This approach is consistent with what we see in the New Testament, where followers of Jesus Christ are connected to one another in covenant relationships built on mutual beliefs, trust, and accountability. We believe it is important not only for individuals to be connected and accountable to a local congregation, but for the local congregation to be connected and accountable to other congregations. Through this connectional approach, we believe we can more faithfully serve Christ and his kingdom.
WE ARE REFORMED
To be “Reformed” means first that we trace our roots to Protestant Reformation. This historical and theological heritage is often expressed in the “Five Solas” of the Reformation: 1) God’s grace alone is the only way to be saved and reconciled to Him; 2) Faith alone is the only means by which we receive God’s grace; 3) Christ alone is our Savior and his work is the only basis of God’s saving grace; 4) Scripture alone is the infallible authority for life and doctrine; and 5) God’s glory alone is the ultimate purpose for our lives.
To be Reformed also means that we adhere to the Reformed theological tradition as expressed in the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms. While these standards are subordinate to God’s Word, they help us understand and articulate the faith that is taught in the Bible.
WE ARE MISSIONAL
To be missional is to declare that God has a mission: the creation of a community of men, women, boys, and girls saved and transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that the gospel is the world’s only hope, and that all believers are sent by Christ to share this good news. As Jesus said, “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
Every Christian has a mission because each of us is an ambassador for Jesus Christ. We are called continually to share the gospel and bear witness to Jesus in the world. The local church exists as an embassy or an outpost for Christ’s global kingdom. Churches are communities of disciples who gather for worship, prayer, and teaching–and then disperse locally and globally to obey the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations (Matt. 28:18-20).
