What Happened in the Upper Room?
Bible Text: Luke 22:1-23 | Preacher: Pastor Stephen Hess |
“What Happened in the Upper Room?”
Exodus 11:1-12:13 / Luke 22:1-23
* One of the keys to understanding the upper room: The Passover Festival.
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover.”
(Luke 22:1)
“Then came the day of unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, ‘Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.’” (Luke 22:7-8)
* The final plague before the Exodus from Egypt: Death of the Firstborn
* Principle from this story: Salvation is by Substitution
Four connections between Jesus and the Passover
1. Just as the people in Egypt were facing the judgment of God, all of us also face God’s judgment because of our sin.
2. Just as God provided salvation by a substitute in the Exodus, God also provides us salvation by substitute!
3. Just as the Passover lambs had to be “without blemish,” Christ himself was without blemish because he had no sin.
4. Just as the blood of the lambs had to be smeared on the wooden doorposts to provide salvation, Christ’s blood had to be shed on the wooden cross to provide our salvation.
